HAVAL HITS THE SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET

HAVAL HITS THE SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET

Five stars. That's what the Chinese buying public has given Haval – which has been the best-selling SUV in its home country for 14 consecutive years, with over one-million units finding new homes last year.

Five stars – that's what the H2 subcompact SUV, just launched in South Africa, gets for everything from style and sophistication to refinement and robustness. Not to mention equipment levels, with top-range models being lavished with everything from six-way electrically adjustable driver's seat to auto headlamps and wipers, while all derivatives boast front, side and curtain airbags. Buyers also get to enjoy the likes of durable, man-made leather upholstery and a high-resolution touch-screen infotainment system, while the whole package is brilliantly built.

And five stars – that's what the H2 scored in CNCAP crash testing. Important this, given that certain other, lesser Chinese brands have in the past hardly covered themselves in glory when it comes to crashworthiness, to be frank.

But then Haval is hardly just “another” Chinese brand.

Instead, it's a name that the South African motoring public is rapidly going to become familiar with. Especially given that GWM is now fully controlled by its Chinese parent company, with the local subsidiary trading as Haval Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

Haval vehicles themselves represent a prestigious sub-brand of GWM – which in turn has sold over 55 000 vehicles since it debuted on the South African market exactly a decade ago.

And of course GWM products will still continue to be available. Among them, the newly relaunched H5 and H6, and refreshed Steed bakkie line ups, to but skim the surface.

The Haval H2, meanwhile, enters a hugely competitive segment, and promises much, as does its smaller sibling, the H1.

The H2's performance is brisk with 105kW and 202Nm of torque to the front wheels thanks to a 1.5-litre turbopetrol motor, while gear changes are taken care of via a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Safety, sophistication and standard equipment levels are stellar, as mentioned.

But above all it's Haval's value factor that's going to appeal in these economically interesting times.

Tyrone Alberts, National Sales Manager, Haval Motors South Africa, pretty much nails it when he says:

“Due to the very volatile interest rates, and South Africa being downgraded to `Junk Status,' the South African public are currently value-starved.

“Haval now provides a rational choice to our valued customers, with a quality SUV that by no means is a newbie in the automotive industry.

“Haval currently has 75 000 employees worldwide, has the capacity to produce more than one-million vehicles per annum, and has been the best-selling SUV brand in China for 14 consecutive years.

“Haval China is fully dedicated to supporting the South African market and is expecting to make serious in-roads into the local SUV market, selling quality vehicles at extremely reasonable prices.

“Parts will not be a concern, as we currently have a first pick rate of 91%. Haval H2 is proudly backed by a five-year/100 000km warranty, five-year/60 000km service plan, and a five-year/unlimited km roadside assistance. That's got to put it among the market leaders”

Adds Tyrone: “We at Haval Motors South Africa are very proud of our brand, and appreciate just how important our customers are. It's imperative that they know they can have peace of mind purchasing a Haval, which we expect to become a brand to be reckoned with on the local front.”

HAVAL HAS LANDED

China's best-selling SUV hits South Africa...

GWM is dead. Long live GWM. But wait – don't stop reading. Let's qualify that.

Great Wall Motors' vehicles are alive and well in South Africa, as GWM now enters its 10th year on the local market.

And what a decade it has been, with this once-unknown brand having become a respected byword for durability, value, and quality, with well over 55 000 vehicles sold through its 40-plus dealerships across the country.

But now it's fully controlled by the Chinese parent company, and the local subsidiary has been branded Haval Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

So we can look forward to an ongoing raft of best-selling, continually updated GWM products, which includes the reintroduction of the popular H5 and H6 SUVs as well as the advent of refreshed Steed bakkie line-ups.

But the big news is that premium Haval products are set to be rolled out – starting with the Haval H2 at the end of this month.

Haval, of course, is the premium sub-brand of GWM, and while the name might still be strange to South African tongues (it rhymes with “gravel”), it's massive in its home market of China, having achieved sales of over one-million units last year. That's right – one million, which makes it the best-selling SUV brand in China.

Indeed, the H2 seems set to shake up the unquenchable South African market for sub-compact SUVs, with its mixture of excellent driving dynamics, slick styling, high safety levels, and superb quality inside and out. Powering the H2 is a punchy, proven 1.5-litre turbopetrol motor making 105kW and 202Nm of torque.

Drive is to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, and equipment levels are stellar, with everything from durable, man-made leather upholstery to a high-resolution touch-screen infotainment system. And reassuringly, this vehicle boasts a five-star C-NCAP rating.

But the biggest surprise with the H2 promises to be its price, which will be announced at the launch, and which will certainly undercut the competition in this hugely popular segment.

At the same time as the H2 the smaller H1 crossover will debut.

Both the Haval and GWM brands seem set to soar on the value-hungry local market with a standard, five-year/100 000km warranty only sweetening the appeal of GWM's Steed 5 D/C, Steed 6 D/C, H5 and H6 products, as well as on all Haval vehicles.

What's more, all Haval’s come standard with five years' road assistance. Something that's arguably unrivalled on the SA market.

As Charles Zhao, managing director of Haval Motors SA, says:
“The South African market plays an important part in our international expansion strategy and going forward we will continue to distribute Haval and GWM vehicles, offer parts and service support as well as administer warranties through the already established dealer network.”

GWM offers impressive warranty and service plan

Johannesburg 15 August - Successful Chinese car manufacturer, GWM continues to gain popularity among local motor consumers. Piece-of-mind and after-sale support for customers are just two of GWM’s most impressive offers.

Purchasing a vehicle is a major financial commitment; consumers want to know their hard-eared money is being spent wisely. Added to this, they want assurance their manufacturer will be there for them should unforeseen problems occur.

A wholly owned subsidiary of GWM, Haval has been granted distribution rights to sell their vehicles to the local market. Haval’s range of professional SUVs are suited to the South African motoring public’s needs, and are a great alternative to the established brands in the SUV segment. In China, Haval SUV ranked No. 1 in sales volume for 12 consecutive years. In 2014, Haval sold 429,000 units in China, up 53 percent year on year. Already an SUV leading motor vehicle brand worldwide, Haval hopes to continue this successful streak in South Africa.

GWM is focused on establishing themselves as a cornerstone brand within the local automotive market by showcasing their quality and design progress over recent years.

Bi-monthly magazine, Bakkie and Truck South Africa voted the Steed 6 2.0 VGT Xscape double-cab the bakkie of the year in 2015 which shows GWM’s automotive progress.

"The new GWM Steed 6 revolutionises what one expects from a top double-cab bakkie, especially at the price," Bakkie & Truck magazine editor Michele Lupini pointed out. "The Steed 6 Xscape flagship blends bakkie convenience with the level of specification and class normally expected of an executive car, backed up by GWM's high level of service and support to stand head and shoulders above the rest and score a comprehensive 2015 Bakkie of the Year win."
