GWM M4 Review: Beauty Meets Beast

Ever since its instruction at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show, the GWM M4 1.5 has impressed with its sleek styling and rugged persona. It was truly the beautiful beast in the crossover segment. So how does the updated GWM M4 2016 measure against its predecessor?

Although beauty is measured in the moment, each GWM M4 review came to similar conclusions. The GWM M4 1.5 can again be dubbed one of the most stylish crossovers in its segment.

The beauty

The black bumper and side sills flow effortlessly from the presented silver grill detail. Rugged looks covered in an elegant tuxedo. The ‘floating roof’ effect is accentuated by the blackened pillars, creating a space for the roof racks that is both fluent and functional. Sharp edged headlights dominated the front persona with the fog lights completing the overall form.

Form flowing function continues when entering the cabin as luxurious leather and premium stitching meets an elegant piano black facia that subdues the busy world into a calming assurance of pristine quality.

Interaction with beautifully detailed design can be kept to a minimum as Bluetooth enables the driver to keep connected at all times. The multi-function steering wheel and easily reachable centre console ensure that the driver can remain focused at the job at hand, with each function at a safe distance.

The beast

The GWM M4 1.5 engine boasts an economical combined fuel cycle of 7.1 L/100 km. Impressive when considering the engine output. The stylish GWM M4 2016 is powered along by 71 kW and 135 Nm.

This power output comes in handy when you take the GWM M4 2016 onto the outskirts of town where the terrain becomes challenging. The GWM M4’s raised ride height of 183 mm is enough to keep going even when nature prefers you don’t.

The fairytale

Each GWM M4 1.5 owner can drive safe in the knowledge that they are being looked after. The GWM M4 2016 is backed by GWM's comprehensive 5-years/100 000 km warranty and 2-years/24-hour roadside assistance. An optional 5-years/60 000 km service plan is also available.

At a retail price starting from only R189 900, the GWM M4 2016 is certainly a remarkable story.
